Who is Dr. Jacqueline Winkelmann?

“Dr. Jacq” is a hospital-based pediatrician working primarily at the Children’s Hospital of Orange County. With 17 years of experience, she’s garnered a wealth of knowledge in pediatric healthcare, and has recently become Chief of Staff at CHOC. Also a mother of two, Dr. Jacq understands the importance of knowing the right and wrong steps to take in raising a newborn, baby, or toddler into childhood. Her Baby Feeding 101 guidelines are designed to help parents know exactly what to do when feeding time arises.

Which baby bottles should you avoid?

As we learned in Dr. Jacq’s clip, the best bottles should be easy for baby to feed from and easy for parents to clean. So, with that in mind, bottles with narrow nipples or drinking spouts should be avoided, as well as bottles with a complicated set of parts that make it harder to clean and sterilize properly. Moreover, parents should always avoid any bottles that contain BPA, a chemical used in making certain types of plastic. If heated improperly, BPA can leak into a bottle’s contents and harm your baby.

What are some easy baby foods to make at home?

For new parents beginning to introduce baby to their first solid and semi-solid meals, there are a few foods to begin with that can go a long way toward making easy meals that are both nutritious and delicious. Mashed sweet potato, cauliflower, and peas are all great starter veggies with plenty of minerals and vitamins to offer, as well as apples, pears, and bananas for a few fruit-tastic options. Once you’ve got the basics down, foods like rice, apricot, kiwi, and tomato can help make mealtime even more dynamic and delicious.
